Swag! Swag! Swag!

Firstly, because it is Sunday, the official day of being a boring lump, I am going to make a lump of a post, and show you what food we bought this week. Secondly, I have accidentally cut myself with knives 3 times in the past two weeks! Come on! I need to work on being more zen and centered, and not such an Edward Scissorhands. I am very haphazard and unintentionally frazzled more often than I want to be. Reading helps, and so does doing dishes and other chores, or taking small pauses in my day just to think about the earth that sustains me and the love in my life. Anyway...

This weekend involved lots of grocery shopping -- at the Farmer's Market, at Woodman's, and at Trader Joe's. My Mom came down to visit for the weekend, so her, Mr. Cheap, & I got up at the ungodly hour of 5:30 a.m. on Saturday morning to get to the Farmer's Market bright and early. There's basically no one there, so social anxieties are at a minimum, and you get the undivided attention of the vendors, because they are chipper with the prospect of a new day, not worn down after giving their 85th sample to a not-really-interested-in-buying-just-snacking patron. It was still dark (with a bright shiny moon) when we arrived, and that made it sort of magical for me. Produce-hunting in the dark!

Concord Grapes -- so excellent. I remember trying my first Concord grape freshman year of college and feeling totally duped because up until then I never knew how good grapes could be. Or how purple your teeth could become after eating them!

Mr. Cheap is a master with potatoes. It's like he receives divine inspiration from starchy, tuberous gods. He picked up a quite pretty-looking array at the Farmer's Market: some blues, some fingerlings, some good old baby reds, and (my personal favorite) sweet potatoes. I can't wait until he makes some tasty side-dish out of them for our Chipotle BBQ Chicken Legs & Thighs this week (recipe coming later! Something to look forward to...).

This is spinach. I know, right? I'm so used to buying baby spinach at the grocery store I forget how...hardy it can look. Spinach from the Farmer's Market almost is a little spicy, too! I'm considering throwing together a plain spinach salad with some oil and balsamic vinegar tonight, because I'm not really doing dinner and I need to eat something besides yogurt, BECAUSE I AM OBSESSED WITH YOGURT.

But not just any yogurt: Brown Cow Cream-Top Yogurt (Woodman's carries it -- thank God!) In maple, cherry-vanilla, vanilla, and raspberry. In case you're not familiar with the term "cream-top," when talking about dairy, it means that it's made with whole milk, and therefore leaves a nice top-layer of cream. It is heavenly, and has zero preservatives, loads of live active cultures, and the milk is gently pasteurized and unhomogenized. Basically, it's my dream yogurt, and it is everything I could have dreamed of and more. Holy shit, really, is all I have to say. I feel like, dairy-wise, I've been denied of flavor for my entire life. And I'm a Midwesterner! Seriously, people. Real about real food, Weston A. Price, etc, and start drinking some goddamn whole milk.

Or just do it because it tastes so remarkable and you'll never want to go back. One more product plug...

I don't want to go into too much detail, but this bread is of the Gods, and its ingredients are so whole and natural it must have been sent from Foodie Paradise. 5 grams of fiber per slice! Your body will thank you. Obviously this is from Trader Joe's. I apologize to my readers who don't live in metropolitan areas, because some of these things will be unavailable to you in the grocery store, but all it means is you'll have to a) research what groceries/health food stores you have in your area and b) become an obsessive label reader, like me.

Here is our fridge after a weekend full of replenishing it and the pantry! The mysterious brown bag is full of mushrooms because someone running a mushroom stand at the Farmer's Market told me they keep longer and fresher that way.  The wine is Malbec (red), and the gigantic plastic container in the upper-right of the main fridge is my Mom's vegetable soup! So grateful to have it on these chilly Autumn nights. She also brought chunks of butternut squash, chicken breasts from a local butcher, and banana bread. Yes, she is an angel. Note unhealthy processed foods; at the same time, note that I am not perfect in my diet (or anything else for that matter) and never will be.
